Cross My Palm with Silver -- Readings

Do you charge something in exchange for readings?

I do not read professionally for strangers, neither did any of the women in my family.  We did however, still "charge" something for readings.  Even today when I read for a friend I expect that a small token, as little as a quarter piece, be placed on the deck before I begin.  The Seeker holds the money between the thumb and index finger of their right hand (no matter which is dominate) and then crosses the cards.

If something is given that can't be held in the hand for the crossing, say a cup of coffee or a crocheted blanket (yep, some of the items I've received), the Seeker still crosses the cards.  This exchange is not to "make money" from the reading, it is to balance out the exchange of energy -- the Querent gives something in exchange for the reading.  This is another one of those traditions that I can't explain, I only know that it is the way that I was taught when I was young.

*Update 7/22 - I should clarify that there are two different "crossings" going on here, one as a blessing for the reading and the other as an exchange for services.

What are your thoughts on charging for readings?  Do you "charge" friends and family?  I'd love to hear about your experiences!

Getting to Work -- Wee Daily Three

Today's wee daily three is all about getting to work!

Rule 1 - Red is good and Black is bad:

B, B, B - Beset by problems and hardships.

Rule 2 - Suits:

C, C, C - Lots of work to do, increased activity needed.

Rule 3 - Numerology:

7, A, Q - Troubles (7), Beginnings (A), Women and/or Truths (Q)

Rule 4 - Card Definitions:

7 of Clubs - Troubles at work or some practical problem; The power of chance, or happenstance, in general
A of Clubs - A new task, goal, or opportunity
Q of Clubs - A woman of darker coloring or a business woman; The truth of a business matter

Outcome:
Be on the lookout and prepare for practical issues or problems (7C) surrounding a new business opportunity (combination of AC and QC).

When I see all the same suits in a spread, as I do today, it is a very loud message to listen to what the cards are saying.  All clubs in a single draw (work, callings, and plans) means that the planning stage is complete... and action / involvement is now required to push through on your goals!

Transitions in Meditation

I have been meditating regularly for quite some time.  Years, actually.  Not always the same way, but always attempting, non-the-less.  I started out with binaural beats and guided and have recently started to incorporate silent meditation into my practice.  This was, and still is, very difficult for me; quieting the mind can be challenging at times.  My usual schedule is to do a guided meditation at lunch after a quick yoga session then a silent meditation in the evening after prayers and retiring to bed.  I usually go to sleep after my family, so it is nice and peaceful in the house!

Well, I don't know what has happened... but something broke loose in my head last night!  I have been feeling the energy cycling through my body, twitching, experienced unwanted weight loss, a high-pitched humming in my ears, and a constant low-grade headache, but attributed it all to stress. After last night's meditation, I don't think that I can view these happenings within a vacuum anymore! I'd said my evening prayers and was preparing for meditation when the twitching began... usually it was isolated to my right eye-brow.  It had been twitching for weeks and was driving me crazy!  Not this time, it was actually originating from inside of my forehead.  It wasn't an external or muscular feeling.  It was the strangest thing, as if I had an electrical current buzzing inside of my brain.  It was quite intense, it didn't hurt, it didn't alarm me.  I just thanked Spirit, accepted this gift, came out of the meditation and drifted off to sleep.

Now today, as I was doing my guided meditation, I saw two very distinct and beautiful images.  One was a vivid pink flower, open and accepting of the sun's rays.  The other image was of a radiant sunbeam breaking through a cloud covered sky.  I'm not sure what these images mean, I am following Lydia Clar's guided meditation series, "Out of Darkness Into Light" and noted everything down as well as times per her recommendations.  I can't help but be very excited about these transitions I am going through.  Meditation for spiritual development is a new journey for me, one I stumbled upon quite by accident, but I am within her grips now!

Have you ever experienced anything like this?  Thought you were going crazy?  Maybe not!

*Update 7/19 - In last night's silent meditation I had a vision of a light gray / silvery feather float down from the sky, it landed gently in my hand.  I don't know what they symbolism is behind this... or what the message is.  A gift from Spirit?  A message that I am on the right path?  Any takers?  I haven't really had visions in meditation before, so this is exciting!

It was always in me."

Cutting the Deck -- Spreads

When looking back at what I have learned about card reading over the years, so many things remain unexplained.  Usually when I would ask, "Why do we do it this way, or that way?"  It was generally met with, "Because it has always been done that way!"  I think that it's sad that some of the old traditions that once meant so much are lost to the sands of time.

One of these established practices that I've wondered about but never knew the origin of was the cutting of the deck with your left hand. Never-mind which hand is your dominate hand, I was taught that you always cut the deck your left hand.  After that, I would then select cards with my right hand and continue with the reading.  Well after thumbing through an ancient copy of Professor P.R.S. Foli's "Fortune Telling by Cards" I found the answer on page 22 of Chapter IV,

"It is always essential to cut cards with the left hand, there being a long-established idea
that it is more intimately connected with the heart than the right. A round table is
generally preferred by those who are in the habit of practising cartomancy. It is a matter
of opinion as to whether the cards speak with the same clearness and accuracy when
consulted by the inquirer without an intermediary. The services of an adept are generally
supposed to be of great advantage, even when people have mastered the rudiments of
       cartomancy themselves."

I admit, the round table is new to me but I'm glad that I've found out about why I as taught to cut the deck with my left hand.  Do you have any cartomancy traditions that you practice but can't explain? I'd love to hear about them!

Tasks Piling Up -- Wee Daily Three

Today's wee daily three is reminding me to "back away from the cards" and get back to work!

Cards:

Rule 1 - Red if good and Black is bad:

R, B, B - A fair beginning steadily worsens and turns foul.

Rule 2 - Suits:

H, S, C - An emotional problem that you will work yourself out of, but slowly.

Rule 3 - Numerology:

Q, 6, 10 - Women and/or Truths (Q), Paths (6), Ends (10)

Rule 4 - Card Definitions:

Q of Hearts - A woman of medium coloring or an emotional or artistic woman; The truth of an emotional matter, or in general, the truth
6 of Spades - Walking away or abandoning something; Cleaning up your life; Getting rid of things; Wrong choice; On the wrong path
10 of Clubs - A great deal of work to do; Work piling up; The completion of a practical project; Achievement, in general; Journey by air

Outcome:
I (QH) have a lot of cleaning up (6S) and tasks to attend (10C) to today. I returned late last night from a short trip with my family out of state, so yes, there is laundry, grocery shopping, etc... all those little things to take care of today!

I don't know about you, but after awhile you will start to see a language develop between you and your cards.  Some days they speak to me more clearly than others.  An example of this is when the 10 of Clubs popped out of the deck whilst I was shuffling... I always see this as a sign to "listen up" ...you need to pay attention to this!  Also, I pulled the Queen of Hearts which usually indicates "me" in the reading.  So I am definitely getting the message about putting up the cards and getting back to the tasks at hand today.

The Lovers Spread -- Spreads

I am not sure where this spread originates from, I believe it is an oldie as I learned it from my Mom a lifetime ago... I still go back to it because it is really good with reading in three card pulls, as I do for the "wee daily three", and works much the same way.

Shuffle and cut the cards as you normally would.  Have the Querent (or you yourself) select 10 cards and lay them out in three rows across in this order:

1   2   3

       4   5   6   10

7   8   9

The cards are then read down in this order:

Cards 1, 4, and 7 represent the Querent.

Cards 3, 6, and 9 represent the other person in the relationship.

Cards 2, 5 , and 8 represent the relationship.

Finally, card 10 is the "gypsy advice" card.  Really, that's how I wrote it down... :-)

Outcome:
Today's draw can have two completely different outcomes.  You will find this often when you start pulling cards regularly!  The first: A fear of losing (3S) wealth (10D) and happiness (10H).  The second: Getting over small aggravations (3S) while preparing for an upcoming trip out of state (combination of 10D and 10H).  The second outcome is more in step with the rules 1 (a problem is solved) and 2 (problem is easily overcome) and thus the one I am going with... and yes it is always boatloads of fun getting the family prepared and packed for a four + hour drive!

I am driving out of state this weekend to visit my family, finances usually aren't a big-deal when we get together!  All's we do is BBQ and swim with the kids, so I'm not sure why the 10S keeps showing up around finances.  I better keep an eye on the bank account, just in case!

Another way of looking at this pull is an opportunity (AC) to travel out of state (10D, 10S).  I am driving out of state next weekend to visit family!

Getting In the Mood -- Readings

So have you gleaned enough from the cards to try a few readings?  How about for yourself, family or a few friends?  The best way to get started is to jump right in!  But first, let's talk about setting the mood, I'm not talking about anything overly dramatic... What you are going for is an atmosphere of peace and tranquility so that you may better concentrate and channel your higher consciousness.

Here are some tips from the venerable cartomancer-to-the-stars Louise Woods for getting into the mystical mood, whether reading for yourself or someone else:

1. Light a few candles - either pink or white will do nicely.  They are highly spiritual colors.

2. Incense?  Of course.  Make it fragrant but not cloyingly so.  Use only enough to gently cleanse the air around you.

3. If you want music, listen to whatever relaxes you before the reading.  Music during a reading, even soothing New Age music, can be distracting.

4. No need to dim the lights or shut the blinds unless you're worried about the guy with the telescope across the way.

5. Sit comfortably, regally if you must.  Keep both feet on the floor; no need for cross-legged contortions.  It could block psychic energy flow.  Remember, you want to be able to reach the cards easily and see them clearly.

6. If you think they may pose a problem, gently banish the kids and pets to another room.  Now let's put a solid-colored cloth on the table, a glass of water on the side, some fresh flowers if you'd like, and we're all set.

And remember this: I'm all for fun and games, not compulsion or unnatural bonding to a deck of cards.  You provide the insight; they provide the tool to help focus your consciousness.
